This is Rietje Binnenkamp’s thimble. For years, Rietje knitted hats for the children of Bambanani. For those who don’t know yet: in the South African winters, the children are
cold. They prefer to put on a thick sweater and are super happy with a warm cap on their heads. In recent years, Rietje has knitted about 2,500 of these hats.
Unfortunately, Rietje was admitted to a nursing home after her 90th birthday and she is no longer able to knit for Bambanani. After collecting the last boxes of hats, her thimble appeared, accidentally left behind. Or not…
